Latest contract details:
Peyton Manning (Denver Broncos)
Coach Ken Whisenhunt has acknowledged signing free agent Peyton Manning is "no longer an option" for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals exercised Kevin Kolb's $7 million option bonus Friday, officially removing them from a race Manning had already eliminated them from. "Since the end of last season we made it very clear that our plan was to head into 2012 with Kevin Kolb and John Skelton," Whisenhunt said. "Obviously something very unique and unexpected presented itself. ... In the end it didn’t work out but from our perspective it was very positive and we certainly don’t have any regrets about it."
According to NFL Network's Albert Breer, the "starting point" for free agent Peyton Manning's contract negotiations are the "parameters" of the five-year, $90 million deal he signed last season.
Coming off four neck surgeries, Manning still has plenty of leverage, as evidenced by the lengths teams are going to stay in the race. Any contract Manning signs will provide protection for the team in case his neck issues resurface while also paying the quarterback at a premium rate.
NFL Network's Albert Breer reports Peyton Manning plans to make a decision on his future Monday or Tuesday.
''People involved'' aren't convinced Manning will adhere to the deadline, but a league source expects the decision to be made early next week. According to Breer, Manning's next contract will resemble the five-year, $90 million deal he signed last season. In addition to the Broncos, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman watched Manning throw at Duke University on Tuesday.
WGFX 104-5 Nashville reports Peyton Manning will workout for the Titans Saturday.
Manning passed his physical with Tennessee earlier this week and is scheduled to throw for the Titans' coaching staff. According to NFL Network, a decision on Manning's future could be finalized Tuesday.
